A Poet’s Ponderance

How to clip the inclination
To share my every scribble,
While they sit in trepidation,
Listening to my dribble?

How to trip up my temptation
To gush to them with gusto?
While they wait with toleration,
(Not commenting very much though.)

I know it’s just imagination,
That there’s anyone who cares.
They take in my animation,
Nodding at me with blank stares.

Now here comes a contemplation,
Sinking in to make me smile.
It condones my recitation,
If just for a little while.

Each desires their own distraction,
Some small way of breaking free
I’ve indulged all their diversions
Now they need to humor ME.

About this poem

Lately, I’ve been excited to read my newest poems to everyone around me. I’m getting the feeling though, that this is becoming a tiresome thing for my audiences. Cute for a while I suppose, but not everyone is a fan of poetry, I guess.

Laurel M. Lee

When I was little, my grandfather had me believing I'd be a famous poet someday. Of course, life never turns out the way you plan, does it? Still, I do have a litle fun with it from time to time. This first contest submission of mine today is the first one I've written in several years, and I only wrote it because a friend's gift inspired me. I could never stick to the rules of the various poetry styles, but have always enjoyed the ones that rhyme. I've long been a fan of Edgar Allan Poe's "Annabel Lee" and John Masefield's "Sea Fever". Having been born in Alaska, I also love Robert Service's "Cremation of Sam McGee". I have a two teenagers and my husband and I will celebrate our 20th anniversary this year. more…

I like the rhyme and meter of this poem. I like the light-hearted message that I can readily relate to. Don't we all as poets sometimes want an audience for our uniquely penned thoughts?

Thanks, Janet! So glad I’m not the only one! Sad but true, isn’t it?
