A Dead-End Love

The first time I met you,
My heart was pounding,
You gave me butterflies,
Like I never knew.

Our first site,
Our first touch,
Our first taste,
It felt so wrong
Yet so right.

When we were together,
I felt light as a feather,
As you understood me,
You made me forget,
You made me happy,
You made me feel free.

The addiction was strong,
One night turned into four,
Four nights turned into four weeks,
Four weeks turned into four years,
After all,
I had nothing left but the streets.

The obsession was now malicious,
Ive never felt so alone,
Yet we were still connected,
But our love was vicious.

I wish to be set free from your toxicity,
As I never want to see you again,
For I will show the world my true authenticity.

I am stronger than you think,
And not as weak as all your strays,
Here I say good bye to you today,
Forever and always.

About this poem

I wrote a poem that's written like a love letter to a drug addiction who wishes to be freed from the toxic relationship with their addiction. Because it is a toxic relationship. People will be up and down during recovery, some will relapse and some won't. I've seen it all with my loved ones and have also experienced it myself. Some may be in recovery for the rest of their lives, and some won't even make it to recovery. I named this poem "A Dead-End Love", because drug/alcohol/addiction is a dead end love. It gets you nowhere except in the gutter, or 6 feet into the ground. For the ones that have made i
