Love Absolute

Chad Allyn Josselyn 1982 (Fort Lauderdale)

My heart aches with the love I hide,
For fear of tarnishing your perfect stride.
You deserve the best, this I know,
But I couldn't risk my flaws and let them show.

I've lost my chance to ever be,
The one to hold you close and see,
The love within your shining eyes,
That I now see with bittersweet sighs.

But my love for you will never fade,
And though it hurts, I'll proudly parade,
The sacrifice I made for your happiness,
For your smile brings me eternal gladness.

So I'll cherish the memories we could've made,
And watch from afar as your love is displayed,
Holding onto the hope that you'll be happy,
Even if it's with someone who isn't me.

About this poem

I wrote this poem a few months back and was inspired to write it when a friend I was interested in pursuing had made it public that they are now in a serious relationship. I put off asking her out or going on any dates because I felt inadequate and would at best be put into the inescapable friend zone at best and pushed aside at worst. I was both scared for myself and didn't want to waste either of our time if I didn't feel good about my chances and would prefer that she spend her time in more fruitful pastures. I don't wish her ill, and only wanted her happiness and felt, ultimately, I couldn't give that to her at this moment in time.
