YOU

Sanni-Arewa Nifemi 1994 (Akure)

This thing you read as me today,
May very well be you tomorrow,
Or the total opposite of you the day after.
There are three secrets all writers know of prophecy:
Do not write it down,
Most people easily make that first mistake.

Do not read it out aloud,
It only takes a handful of people who don't know what it means or what it'll be to read it.
Then lastly,
To keep a prophecy from self-fulfilling,
Do not read it in a room with yourself.

Guess who just made the last one....

About this poem

I was reflecting on the nature of prophecy and the power of words.
