A True Friend

A True Friend
 
If you would have asked me when I was younger how many friends I have
I would have counted everyone that I hung around in my past
If you would have asked me that same question 15 years after that
I would have thought there’s still quite a few who had my back
But after the trials and tribulation and all the hard times I went through
When all of the smoke has cleared that same answer became three to two.
In life I’ve learned everybody’s not your friend
Some people around you only pretend.
They pretend to like you when they really don’t,
They pretend there’s no motive when there is something they want.
Like what can you do for them? What are they really looking for?
Smiling faces tells lies, we all know that for sure.
Some friends seem so concerned but they’re really not at all
You only realize after the storm how they rejoice over your down fall.
But while their celebrating because you’re down on your luck
Here comes that true friend to dust you off and help pick you up
A true friend does not isolate you or misguide you in bad times
They give you guidance and show you the right way and encourage you to climb
A true friend, a confidant remains loyal and stays by your side
Even when you make mistakes, even when they know you’ve lied
A true friend listens and tries to understand where you’re coming from
A true friend stands in battle no matter the odds and never run
A True friend will be there through the thick and the thin
I’m honored to have had Derrick Merriwether as one of those true friends.
