Beneath Her Sea
Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)
In the cave of unspoken truths,
He waits,
Tracing the hollowed echoes
Of their fights,
Twisting,
Corkscrewing,
Unwinding his mind
In search of reasons,
Excuses,
A flight
From the city of doubts she plants
Like blood-red roses
In his chest.
She denies,
Like the sea erasing footprints,
Each accusation,
Each suspicion he stakes
As a flag
On her immaculate shoreline,
Her voice
A soft lullaby of innocence,
Seducing him back
Into the undertow
Of her implausible narratives.
It starts with a side glance,
A sly smile,
Her pupils shifting
Like tides against rock,
And he becomes a buoy
In her turbulent sea,
Bobbing aimlessly
As the waves grow fierce,
Her words twisting
And turning
Like eddies,
Swirling,
Swallowing him whole.
He feels the currents
Shifting beneath his feet,
The delicate fabric of trust,
Fragile as salt,
Unraveling
In the overwhelming
Swell of her denial,
Absorbing his doubts,
Folding them neatly
Into pockets of disbelief,
Until he wonders
If he's the one weaving
A tapestry of deceit.
Each whisper
Of her gaslighting words,
Veiled in sweet nothings,
Beguiling and charming,
Overwhelms him,
Drowns him in shifting tides,
And he finds himself
Lost in the ever-changing
Depths,
Blindly navigating
A tempestuous love,
Where his certainties erode
Like a sandcastle.
He watches
The moon's reflection
Float above her,
Replacing his intuition
With doubt's cold embrace,
And he dreams
Of shores
Untouched by her waves,
Where he can stand firm,
His own lighthouse,
Illuminating
The truths
She tries to extinguish,
No longer gasping
For breath
Beneath her sea.
