You are god, this is your kingdom

Korrine Nadler 2008 (United States)

Our father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name
My Father, who I once adored, and to now I plea
While some’s miracle worker unlocks their treasure and flaunts it, without shame
The very person whose miracle I once was locked my treasure, and threw away the key

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.
This kingdom, of which you've built, whose work will never be done
Whose work you've dedicated your life to, and your loyalty to, you never question
A loyalty so strong your willing to sacrifice anything, and one I could never out-run

Give us this day our daily bread.
And attempt to give those who you should have loved, grace
Forgive those of us who could not uphold your legacy instead
However your priorities have been made clear, in your eyes i will always be a disgrace

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us
You must find comfort in the fact i would have once forgiven you
I feel sick remembering how I once adored you, now i wouldn't dare to cause such a fuss
For you've allowed fools to trespass, poke around at my brain and for that I see you in a new view

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
Though some people are born with the evil coursing through their veins
People like you, born to do the the work of the devil, willing to sacrifice all people
Pride too large, glutinous for power, and too greedy to be remorseful for your daughters pains

For thine is the kingdom. The power and glory forever. Amen

About this poem

I wrote this poem from Rosemary Kennedy’s perspective. I would encourage any reader to look into her tragic story but for a short synopsis she was born mentally disabled and hid by her family, eventually her dad Joseph Kennedy sr. ordered her to be lobotomized but it left her incapacitated for the rest of her life. I wanted it to kind of take the reader through a process of seeing how Rosemary may have felt after her dad had her lobotomized and I wanted it to seem like she was going through this therapeutic experience of first feeling betrayed by her father to hating him. I wanted it to seem like something that she may have written or felt if she hadn't been left incapacitated by the lobotomy. I also used the lord's prayer in between stanzas because when she was getting lobotomized she had to be awake through all of it and they would ask her questions and one of the things she had to do was recite the lord's prayer. I wanted to use the prayer as sort of an innocent symbo
