Misunderstood

Why can't I be kind, for the sake of being kind?
Or why can't I be viewed as merely being good?
Do they think that I want something from them in turn?
No, I don't, for I am a giver at heart, a person who is misunderstood.

Why can't I just call you "Beautiful" and have it viewed as a compliment?
Why can't you just be a "special" friend who is dear to my heart?
No, I am seen as someone who wants something more behind this kindness, putting on a facade.
A misunderstood friend from whom you wish to part.

I'll kindly bid you adieu as you wish,
Though I hope you'll give me a chance to explain myself as good friends always should.
At the end of the day, it is what it is,
But I am tired of being judged and misunderstood.

It saddens me, and it kills me, paining my heart to no end.
I am a misunderstood, giving soul, who because of this loses many a friend.
But I won't let such instances change me, for then I am not being true to myself as I should.
I will live this life being kind and giving, continuing to be a soul who is forever misunderstood.

At the end of the day, I only want the very best for you.
I only want to support you, cheer for you, watching you succeed and achieve your greatest of dreams.
You are still a beautiful and special friend and soul to me, one whom I pray for each day and each night.
However, I am not the good friend you once saw me as because you misunderstand this soul's intent, his why.

I am just misunderstood.

About this poem

This poem is dedicated to the many women friends in my life who have misunderstood my words and kindness, thinking that just because I give them things, that I want something in return. Yes, I could be attracted to you, but you'll never know that as I cannot and will not act on such feelings, making my intentions impure. I give because I care for and about you as a person, nothing more. I want you to know that there is someone in this world who sees the beauty in you that you may not, so that is why I give you gifts, not to get anything back in return from you.

Dr. Peter G. R. Toves

Dr. Pete Toves is an off the cuff poet, one who writes about his experiences as a therapeutic way to deal with issues in his life. He is an American poet, U.S. Air Force Veteran, and follower of Jesus Christ. He hopes that what he writes will speak to others, inspiring those who too may be dealing with similar issues in their own lives. Writing poetry is a God-given talent, one that we should use to uplift others and help them to heal from their own pains. We are all in this together. more…
