Books

Joe Strickland 1986 (Hobbysville, SC)

Books have a way
Of stopping time
In a particular moment,
As if to remind us
To not let the memory fade.

We turn each page,
We're transported
To another world,
Where the characters live
And breathe
And the story unfolds
And unwinds.

And yet,
Amidst the pages,
There's a sense of stillness,
A quietness
That whispers,
"Pay attention, don't miss this."

I'm convinced
Books hold moments
In their grasp,
That might otherwise slip away,
And they say to us
In gentle tones,
"Let's not forget this day."

Whether happy,
Sad,
Or bittersweet,
Books capture life's nuances
And hues,
And in their pages,
We find a place
Where time stands still,
If we so choose
To adopt.

And so I read
with an open heart,
And let these moments linger,
Books have a way of stopping time,
And reminding us
to remember.

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
