A Look Through The Keyhole
A startling sound cuts through the night,
I sit up in bed, arose with a fright.
I walk to the hall to check and see,
A knock at the door it came to be.
“Who's up at this hour?” I thought to myself.
“Perhaps a traveler in need of some help.”
Then came a scratching, quite like a cat.
“Perhaps it’s just me, or perhaps a rat.”
I tiptoe down the hall, the floor cold under my feet.
My tummy starts rumbling, I think “It’s not time to eat!”
Another knock came, this louder than before.
“Who is it!?” I shout, listening for more.
No answer in response, I halt in my tracks.
“Who is it!? I yell as the fireplace cracks.
Again no reply. “Maybe they’ve gone?”
Another loud knock, It’s almost the dawn.
I reach the front door and extend my hand.
“I should look first.” This I had planned.
I peer through the keyhole and what do I see?
A cold grey eye staring back at me!
I jump back in fright, trembling in fear.
Then more scratching is what I hear.
“Get away from here whoever you are!,
I don't want my home an abattoir!”
I run to the fireplace to grab the poke.
Is this someone’s idea of a cruel joke?
Through a crack in the curtains I see light.
The sun has come up, gone is the night.
I open my eyes as sweat drips down my head.
I sit up straight, “I'm still in my bed?”
I get up and so it would seem,
This was just a nightmare, a really bad dream.
