To Be Prime

james santana kilbride 2004 (Providence)

we have two factors
while alone, primes are many
to infinity

About this poem

(drawing not included) I chose to represent this haiku in the form of the Ulam spiral, or a graph that shows all prime numbers. Each prime is represented by a dot within the drawing, with the haiku on the outside. Primes are referred to as being alone since they only have two factors, 1 and themselves, and not all of them are coupled or next to another prime. As there’s an infinite amount of numbers, this means an infinite number of primes. Therefore, we have ‘many’ primes.
