A Defense of Silly Grins
How quick we are to wipe away our odd and sudden smiles
That have worked themselves onto our mouths and sit there for a while
We alarm to feel contortions in the corners of the lips
That the smile weird, and wired, and wild, involuntary sits
From a riff upon the heartstrings then a fern unfurls wide
Members spread and show the color of the joy that lives inside
Oh woe to grins brought to an end when noticed all too soon
For fear of seeming foolish, being scolded by the moon
But looks the moon who starts to swoon
At sudden smiles that stay a while, which live inside and open wide,
And are not wiped away
About this poem
Often we feel ourselves smiling at odd moments. Maybe we remembered an old joke or had a pleasant interaction with a stranger when suddenly we have the widest of grins on our face. Some might feel embarrassed, and many of us will wipe the smile off our face as soon as we notice it. There’s no reason to keep the smile, it simply doesn’t belong there. But doesn’t it?
