I want to think of you as a slice

I want to think of you as a slice of the best part of my life

When all I had was self loathing and personal strife

You made me smile instead of losing myself to perpetual tears

When I thought default of my life was all anxieties and fears

Your words began to let me see myself as if through your eyes

The doubt and worry left my mind as ego inflated, began to arise

Repeated compliments inflated me to such an overconfidence

You balked at my vanity and as I lost you, I gained diffidence

Now all I do is think of you and how it was an egregious price

I want to think of you as a slice, left in the past of my life.

About this poem

A little over a year ago, around March 2 or March 3, I was challenged by a friend to write a poem based upon a phrase he said. The title is that phrase, the poem is the result.
