You Are The Snow.

It’s you, isn’t it? I knew it! You’re the snow!
Today was the first time I felt you since the doctors dealt that final blow.

There was something so warming about the frozen flakes that kissed my face.
Those familiar flutters of you, before you left this barren space.

An infantile urge forced me to the icy ground. We played together and I made a snow angel, just so I could swaddle you all around.

It starts to sting a little though, when you spend too long in the snow.
I remembered that feeling too. That bitter, numbing pain that comes with this season of missing you.

I guess that’s why it doesn’t snow every day,
Because it hurts too much to be reminded of the fact you couldn’t stay.

“When will I feel you again?” I worry. Check the forecast. Quick, hurry!
Now that I know it’s you, promises of sunny spells and brighter days ahead are words I dread.

As I sit and watch your white magic melt through the window, I try not to dwell on how unfair it all seems,
Then I smile a little as I remember, it’s always snowing in my dreams.

About this poem

This poem came from the restless mind of grieving mother, on yet another sleepless night during the winter of 2021 when we were dealing with the loss of our twin pregnancy at 11 weeks. Fast forward almost exactly one year later...we welcomed our rainbow baby in early December 2022. The newspaper headlines that day warned that "the cold snap has officially arrived" as the first snow of the season fell in Ireland where we live. To some it might seem silly, but to me it was a little sign.

This poem made me feel like I feel on those days when I'm sitting outside on the balcony with a lukewarm breeze caressing my cheek and relaxing me with calming peace.
