Love, what are thou?
Abby Kesington 1979 (Lagos)
Love, what are thou?
Abby Kesington.
Is it a flutter in the pits of your stomach?
Or a blush on your plump cheeks
Perhaps, it’s that sparkle of light in your eyes?
This thing called love!
Does it make you shiver with cold on a hot summer night?
Or warms you up with need on a blistering cold morning,
…like hot lava rushing down your privy parts?
This thing called love!
Does it come in colors of rose petals or white orchids?
Perhaps, it’s the bouquet of flowers in porcelain vases draped in red ribbons
That makes you blossom like the flowers of autumn?
This thing called love!
What really are you?
Some say you are “purest of them all.”
Quick to overlook faults, graciously granting second chances to recalcitrant souls
who smear you with their depravity and belittle you to just a feeling…..
Others dare say you don’t exist at all...
Just a figment of human imagination….
If you are as pure as they say,
I don’t want to smear you with my impurities
If you are as forgiving as they say,
I ponder if you can look over my shortcomings
And if you are just an imagination
Please paint my mind with pictures of your portrait,
A representation of your likeness.
For you are not just a thing called love but a mystery unfathomable.
