The Power of Self-Awareness: Overcoming the Triggers of the Mind
The amygdala, our emotional center, keeps
The sensory memory of life's fleeting hours,
And as our life unfolds and sorrow creeps,
It stores each moment's pain, and joy, and showers.
But danger lurks, and triggers do alert
The brain to threat, a perceived attack,
And so it sends the body to assert
Defense, fight or flight, a sudden attack.
And thus, our instincts are awakened, though
The threat may be imagined or untrue,
And so we react, with passions that do flow,
And lash out, with a rage that's fierce and true.
But what if we could learn to curb this rage,
And break the cycle, from our history's page?
It takes self-awareness, discipline and might,
To understand and control what we feel,
And find the calm in the eye of the night,
And soothe the pain that our triggers do reveal.
For when we learn to manage our triggers,
We find a safer and more connected life,
A world where conflict is not a siren,
And relationships are filled with love and light.
So let us strive to be more self-aware,
And harness the power of our mind,
For when we do, we will find with care,
A life that's safer, and a love that's kind.
So take a moment, and think of your triggers,
And understand the source of your pain,
And then with love, and patience, and a spirit,
Break the cycle, and find peace again.
About this poem
This poem explores the concept of the amygdala, which is referred to as the emotional center of the brain. The poem describes how the amygdala stores memories of life's experiences, both positive and negative, and how it triggers the body to respond to perceived threats through the fight or flight response. The poem then highlights the importance of being self-aware and managing these triggers to overcome the cycle of rage and to find a safer, more connected life filled with love and light. The poem concludes by encouraging the reader to reflect on their own triggers and to work towards breaking the cycle of pain and finding peace. more »
