The Rabbit Hole

Is dark, very dark. It’s a terrible place to be.
It’s so dark I can no longer see
What’s real and what’s not and there is no sleep
It’s hard to get out of this hole. It’s so steep.

How did I get here? It was a slippery slope?
I just fell in a heap and thought, there is no hope
It talked to me about all things I want to forget
I’m trapped within my mind with only regret

I felt so alone, the emotion so raw
There was nothing left here for me anymore
Outwardly I’d smile and put on a brave face
Telling everyone I’m fine, I can keep up the pace

I tried to be happy but deep down inside
I was crying, wishing, and wanting to die
My mind keep turning and turning throughout the days
Over and over, of all the ways

Friends try to help me by saying kind things
Like come out with us and have a few drinks
Just get out of bed and go for a walk
But I do not have the energy even to take

Then one day the window opened wide
And the sun shone in and warmed me deep inside
Bit by bit I pull myself out
I had reached the top edge, so I let out a shout.

And before too long I was happy again
Never wanting to go through that much pain,
So, I must be careful and watch where I tread
Because there are rabbit holes everywhere up ahead.
