Inhale, exhale

You know what? Sat here listening to his breathing.
His loud, loud breathing I notice more and more about him.
The hesitation before each exhale like a predator to its prey.
the panic of each  inhale like he’s constantly taking his last, or he hopes.
I listen to the pattern of his breath leaving his soft lips like the thoughts that pass through his mind daily.
The re-occurring thought that tells him he is unworthy of that next breath.
That deep breath that he draws right from the tip of his toes to the very point of his lungs expansion, just to make him feel.
I hear his cry for help upon his inhale followed by the sound of  his courage upon his exhale.
So you know  what ? Sat here listening to his breathing.
His loud, loud breathing, I’m not annoyed, I’m just proud that he is.

About this poem

I wrote this poem while I was on FaceTime to my boyfriend. He had fell asleep on the call after he had a tough night. The words fell into place in my mind and I knew I needed to write them down as I thought one day someone may need to read these words and be inspired by their own courage.

Maisie Anger

My name is Maisie Anger, I am 16 years old and have always had a love of writing especially poems. When I was younger I’d wake up in the middle of the night and write down words that had come into my head and from then the poetry grew. I find that poetry helps me collect my thoughts and emotions so I tend to write about personal situations or things that I feel strongly about. Although my poems are usually limited to my eyes only, I’d like people to be able to read them and find comfort in them as I do when writing them. more…
