FLOWERS

FLOWERS
Seemed sweetest when found on Market/
Not a store but a street,
Way back in NineTeenSeventy somethin'/
NineTeenSeventy-Two to be exact.

She could've been Minnie Rippertin's Daughter/
She looked like Minnie and wore flowers In her hair like Minnie, but she was only Twelve years old like me/

And as I watched this Flowers blossoms Bloom
Stevie Wonder Hits and The Commanders "Just To Be Close To You"
Watered the grounds of that for which My love for Flowers grew!

My Young Black Love/
My First Love/
It's so strange these days how the Seasons have changed,
And how my Love for Flowers,
Well,
It still remains!

About this poem

I wrote this poem for the first girl I'd ever loved. We were both very young when we met that night on 33rd Market Street way back in 1972, 51 years ago. The relationship we shared for a little over 12 years was one of the best experiences I've ever encountered. Twenty years later I wrote this poem. Her name is Anita Flowers.
