A Creek in Winter

Tom Despard 1945 (Lancaster, PA)

January 23

The trail meandered with the creek,
The cool air breezed breath and cheek.
Sun shells shimmied up and down,
And glistened like a sparkling crown.
The logs slept and the leaves laid still
Along the banks in the sweet chill.
Barren tree trunks formed a ledge,
White and gray ice hugged the edge.
A paddle of mallards pecked the water
And gaggled about the windy weather.
Smoothly rolling over the raised rocks,
A soft gushing sound of natural locks
Scored this symphony of God’s peace
On a winter’s wet, wild and lovely lease.

About this poem

I walked on a trail in the woods along a creek in Pennsylvania and took a photo of a beautiful winter scene - then wrote this poem about it.
