Christmas card

My Christmas Card
© Trevor D Souza
Unpacking my trunk of Christmas frills
I took out lights, star, bells and whistles,
Then suddenly I saw a card
That took me back in time:

Forty years have gone by
Since this card you gave to me
Now I’m alone
To put up a Christmas tree.
This card you wrote by hand
The words I treasure still
Christmas is for giving
That gives a Christmas thrill’
You signed off my darling
Your name with love to me
But then you were there
To help me with the Christmas tree.

The Christmas card is precious
Holding dear in my memory
More than all adornments
The festoons and the tree.
I miss you every single day
Since you left for far away
But when it comes to Christmas
I feel like yesterday.

I go with joy and peace to the poor
To the lonely people out there
I spread some Christmas cheer
But now I know it’s Christmas
A crib and a star to place
In the best corner
The Christmas tree has no case.
There I place this card
Where the star once stood so bright
Now it matters more to me
Than the twinkling of changing lights
