Autumn Ground

It wasn’t your fault your words cut so deep,
It was my fault for believing.
I’m a toasting glass in the midst of revelry,
Used and then crushed to pieces.

The bruises you left on my skin faded but
It somehow hurts even more
Like all the words you said but didn’t mean
And all those nights plagued by broken dreams.
Now it all means nothing but the tears still come
Crashing in waves, overflowing sore eyes
And broken hearts like trampled red and yellow leaves.

My feelings are the Autumn ground which you stood on
And stamped on until every last piece of green
Was dead and crushed beneath your feet.
I’m much more fragile than I believed.
