Naked woman running

You desire to know me,
You desire to understand,
I don't want you to,
It's best you think you do–so I can sleep well at night.
You didn't see the signs,
How can I trust you with my identity?
I'd have to live every day, wondering if you've ratted me out.
Opening up to you would be like taking off my clothes outside in the rain.
At least it will feel good at the moment,
Then I'd run away to go find shade.
At that moment,
It'll all come back to me
And I would wonder why I did it.
I would never put my fate in your hands like that.
The rain brings sickness I expect
But what you may do I still can't imagine.
And when I walk about,
I'd feel naked,
I would feel like a naked woman walking. Not only that, but I'd be exposed,
Open for everyone else to see.
No! I can't be that woman,
I'd be too easy to hurt,
It's best I keep to me,
It's best you believe what you think,
It's safer for you and for me.
I can't be her,
I can't be that naked woman running.

About this poem

This poem is based on the story of a local woman who has suffered neglect and abuse which has caused her some traumatic disorders. A man claimed to love her and after sometime in their relationship, he asked her why she was witholding a lot about herself from him and why she was afraid to be herself around him. She refused to tell him and this poem is her reason. Talking about her past, struggles and pains is like taking off her clothes. Trauma is hard to talk about and in some local communities victims will only be further exposed to public scrutiny, stigma, misconception and verbal abuse. According to them, if they told anyone about it, the wind will carry their story and it will no longer be a secret. Whenever they walked it would feel like they were naked and it will be even more painful. I dedicate this poem to women and girls who are victims of abuse and had to stay silent in order to preserve what is left of their dignity, who because of fear has decided to build walls around h
