AM I GUILTY?
The salty pattering of pain cascaded,
as judging eyes shot arrows of blame to
hit her torso. A lethal yoke hung over
her heavy heart dressed in white innocence.
Her only crime indexed most heinous,
are bare-backs fused with low necklines, weapons
to beguile the heroic rapist. One, whom
holy heart and beautiful nature was
put to test by her naked desires.
“Her back arched”, “Her hands held on so tight”,
were words chanted. Who can indict such man?
Yet, my flowing skirt of chastity lured
him in. Not once, but always on new moons
with the kisses of cold steel to my throat.
Yet, my decent blouse was shredded into
silent sobs of knotted threads tossed to the
side in the luminous darkness of the
chilly night. but I knew, my back was not
bare, not were eyes of cleavage seen. Who
then can indict such a man, as he tore
the veil of my virtue. Or Perhaps, Am I guilty?
About this poem
This poem is a free verse, and was inspired by true events. It is to shed more light on the issues and consequences of our actions as a society on rape cases, especially in my country Nigeria.
