White Pill

White pill, nothing fancy, nothing nurturing or sweet,
White pill, chase it with water, eight ounces,
Chase it with heat-
From my face,
As I stand by, watch in anguish, her embrace
With something coming, something ill.

Something too dangerous to place in a will,
Some affliction; a coffin of cough syrup,
Laces on her head,
Titanium holding the lobes,
Once fastened naturally instead.

So white pill,
Won’t you do your job correctly,
Won’t you spend your life savings spending,
The ounces of water she tried to chase away
Tingley things, unwanted truths, willfully doing
What we thought we never had to do.

The ounces, malignantly: removed,
Our mother, here,
White pill, white pill, why fill
this hope up?
No help at all,
Just an extended warranty,
Eradicated softly, sip by sip.
Not even the majority.

Knowing what this poem is really about makes me wonder if the proper function of poetry is to communicate with people who know you and your world. There is a lot here that casual readers will never understand or feel.
