The River

Jim Rainey 1943 (Chicago)

              The River
        Jim Rainey, Illinois

The river carries all my tears away
For still, it seems, she died but yesterday.
But it was many, many years ago
And still, I come to watch the river flow.

She smiled until she could smile no more;
So sad to know the joy there was before:
I have come these many years to reminisce alone.
The river is my home away from home.

About this poem
