Adulthood Inn
From birth we put our lives in your hands
We never had a reason to distrust
We never had a reason to suspect
Our loyalty you had
We were blindsided
The highest level of treason
You should be tried
Your crimes deserve the high court
How could we have known
This conspiracy infiltrates the highest ranks
The whole world is in on it
It is betrayal we say
War we declare
Give us the lives you took away
Give us the lives we were promised
Give us the fairy tales you dangled
Give us our happily ever afters
Give it or with force it will be taken
…
You can’t can you
It was all a lie you see
It's soul-crushing to realize
Reality a slap in the face
A bucket of ice-cold water
Ripped from childhood dreams
Welcome we hope you have a lovely stay with us at adulthood inn
Just leave your hopes and dreams at the door you won’t be needing them here.
About this poem
I wrote this poem just after I started my first office job. I felt so betrayed and confused because we are painted this picture from a young age of what our lives will look like. It felt like this great big conspiracy because when I told adults how I felt, they all just told me I would get used to it. Why would you keep this a secret until there is no escape? This poem is about that period of my life when I realized most adults in their jobs are unhappy and we all just need to deal with it. more »
