Best Man’s Friend

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

I am a man who knows God and His Son
Jesus Christ; I will never deny his name.

A mockingbird harassed me
As I walked upon the earth
And when I turned the corner
There I noticed him at first
A quiet and a peaceful life
Is all that I desire
A life that glorifies the Lord
And shuts the mouth of liars

To dress it and to keep the garden
There I want to stay
And in the presence of the Lord
He won’t drive me away
No evil thing will enter it
I will not eat that fruit
So, nothing will grow up in me
That has a bitter root
