OH! GREAT BABYLON

Li-inks10 2002 (Kaduna)

HE LEFT SODOM AND WONDERS THE EDGES OF  GOMORRAH,
SLAYING, BEATING, SURVIVING.
STORMING THE HIGH WALLS OF BABYLONIANS,
AND PROWLING THE DARK SEAS AMONG PIRATES.
SLAUGHTERING THE INHABITANTS AND LEAVING THEM DROWN BY THEIR OWN BLOOD.
MEN WHERE FORCED TO SWIM IN THE OCEAN OF BLOOD THEY CREATED.
THE BRIDGE BETWEEN IGNORANCE AND INNOCENCE.
THE SHORTEST DISTANCE BETWEEN ANY TWO POINTS IS A STRAIGHT PATH.
FALLEN OF ALL CITIES,
BUT MOST LOVED OF ALL.
YOU HAVE DESIRES MANY CRAVE FOR,
AN ANCIENT CITY AGES BEFORE.
YOU HAVE  AND CONSUMED THE BLOOD OF THE INNOCENCE LIKE VAMPIRES,
AND WITH THIS EVIL YOU ESTABLISH EMPIRES.
YOU HAVE CLAIM THE DESTINIES OF DESPERATE SOULS,
AND BURNT THEIR PAIN IN HOT COALS.
THE LOST ARE NOW THE PREY,
FOR YOUR SAKES ALL I PRAY.
LET THE EYES OF YOUR UNDERSTANDING BE ENLIGHTENED,
AND MAY THE PATH OF YOUR PILGRIMAGE BE BRIGHTENED.
DO NOT RUN TO THE MOUNTAINS FOR HELP,
NOR FLEE DOWN THE HILLS FOR ANSWERS.
DO NOT DESIRE THE SATISFACTIONS OF THE FLESH,
ELSE YOUR LIVES WILL BE A THRESH.
WHEN BABYLON CALLS DO NOT ANSWER,
WHEN SHE CRIES DO NOT COMFORT HER.

About this poem

Babylon represents the pleasures and desires that clouds the eyes and sums the obsessions of youths and stand as an obstacle between them and their creator.
