Quarantine Quartet

C M Rajan 1961 (Kerala)

1.

Have you ever vegetated

--- being all the damned time in just one place,

with noting to do

and nary a one to talk to?

Unmoving and unmoved

You stand and stare out

--- the mind wondering

where all the thoughts have vanished.

2.

Out in the open

It's all change.

It shines, rains and snows

As seasons arrive and exit

--- the wind sometimes joining in the play

3.

Rooted at the window like a damned plant

you stare out and see

the forest of disease and decease

slowly and relentlessly moving towards you.

Like Macbeth in his castle you stare on

.... still and chilled.

4.

Numb and dumb

you stand.

You cannot flee;

nor can you stay

With the breath stuck in your throat

there you stand

--- the mind wondering

when end would begin.
