America the Pitiful

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

How many times I struck you
And now you’re going to fall
I struck you in the head and neck
I kicked you in the jaw!

You shouldn’t climb into the ring
Unless you think you’ll win
Why do you fight against the LORD?
And shake your fist at him

Woe to the foolish nation
That refuses to be warned
Rejecting all the messengers
Who say you’ll lose your horn

But you made the Nazirites drink wine
And commanded the Prophets not to prophesy
