Apprehension

The dust rose again today
Carrying chips of stone
Swirling round and round
Leaving piercings in their wake.

The atmosphere thickened
And hung in the air like lead
Everything worthwhile gone
The ground forever lost.

The mice came out
Tentatively at first
Getting bolder as they came
Yet fearful too and wary.

Silence was easier
No recriminations
Everything back in place
Until the next explosion
