Assailants

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

As sail ants on sticks of wood
A branch fell in the river
And it became a ship for them
A gift came from the Giver

It didn’t fit into the plans
The ants had for themselves
The gift was that the Branch fell in
And stayed there for their health

Though it made more work for them
The ants did not complain
The Branch would carry all their wealth
Into another plain

The river flowed into a lake
The Branch rested on the shore
But the ants could get no break
Their wealth had to be stored

They worked, each one, with diligence
Until all was put away
Prepare your fields and build a house
A place where you can stay

Then like the ants, with diligence
Do all the work you’re given
If God is pleased he’ll bless your life
And you will go on living

But not just for a little while
We’ll walk this road together
And we will both see Jesus Christ
And live with him forever
