Alive

I stand in the endless oblivion of an Appalachian forest

I wonder how long the trees have been alive and how long the rocks have rooted themselves in the ancient dirt

This tree is probably decades older than me

Wait, I'm alive

I awoke this morning

I opened my eyes and I breathed this morning

I raised out of bed and I walked this morning

My brain pondered worthless questions of what I was
going to eat this morning

I took a shower and prepared for the day this morning

I went into the woods this morning

I stood below a tree and questioned its age this morning

I thought about how old a rock was this morning

As I think of all this I realize something

I am alive this morning

About this poem

Something I wrote while on a walk in Appalachia
