You Called It Love
Shattering sounds of glass breaking,
Church bells ringing
Amd choir voices singing.
It's time to bid farewell to the power you had over me.
No closed fists, no more clenched jaws
No more bruises, except for those you
Permanently etched on your heart.
My knees, they're on their way to healing.
The shakes are gone, the game is done.
It was fun while it lasted.
And when I say fun, I mean scarring to the body
When I say body, I mean every single person in this room
Today.
We are angry. We are also very sad, very regretful
How could we have let it happen?
But, how could we have ever known?
You called it love, sometimes called it discipline.
You said you were sorry but you lied
Because had it been the truth, I wouldn't be here today.
Walking out of that door for the final time,
And never to be seen again.

About this poem
I wrote this poem to confront the abuse I've endured from the person who found me at my most vulnerable and left me more disfigured than I thought I could ever be. I also wrote this poem in the third person, confronting myself for all the times I've claimed to love me, yet would still find ways to harm this body.
