Burning World

Salem Wood 2000 (New York)

When you are born into a burning house you are made to believe the whole world is on fire when it's not. I wasn’t born into a burning house but it only took a few months shy of being 15 to believe the whole world was on fire. February 12th is when the fire started, I didn’t notice the fire until February 17th, but by then the fire had spread so far I couldn’t put it out, and you’d think once I’d noticed the fire I’d start to put it out instead of fueling the thing that created it. But why should I be responsible for a fire I didn’t start? Why do you blame me for the fire you created? I had to walk around the flames to avoid being burned, but the second you needed help I’d step into them putting the fire in you out while I was slowly burning, but you wouldn’t think twice before saying that you wouldn’t step in a fire to save me from it. But you expected me too. You want the world to work in your favor and anyone who doesn’t follow through with that is a bad person in your eyes, you put the blame of the fire on them just so you can get away with starting a fire. The fire grew for so long on April 22nd I’m still putting it out not even close to reaching the end. So tell me, why do you put the blame of the fire on me? And why am I still trying to put out a fire I didn’t create?

About this poem

I got the idea of this from the TikTok trend where people respond to the quote "When you're born into a burning house, you think the whole world is one fire. But it's not." By Richard Kadrey. This poem is about putting a lot of effort into a relationship and getting nothing back from the person.
