Summer Day's Query
In a late summer day back in August
Where we walked – hand in hand
The grass flowing in light wind around me
Waiting to catch me when I should land
And the horses which grazed the field
Free with their own reign
Glanced directly at you
And shook their regal mane
When – placed upon one royal steed –
There, sat I
Taking in the view with free
Trees and flowers rolling by
For once, I recognized, at last,
What my life had become
And decided, that to relish life,
I must never live, for anyone
To live only for myself
Is what I realized that late summer day
But beside me sat you
In a dream, whisked away
With the sun setting on the horizon
Colors melting in the sand
And we held each other tight like children,
Scared – on burning land
I mused, “We must never live for anyone”
But for you, I could display
My love and endless affection
Yet I knew I must live another day
On that late summer day back in August
Where we slept – hand in hand
The grass cushioning our bodies
Holding us with careful hands
I felt comforted – by the world
Understood what life must be
To live a life so privileged
Yet not live at all, gallantly
