For Tommy

I sit here with pen in hand,
Not knowing where to start.
I was 21 when life began,
That’s when you took my heart.
When we met my heart had been shattered,
Life seemed lost and nothing mattered.
Everyone said we wouldn’t last.
There was too much difference, too much past.
But we knew on that sun filled day
As our lives were joined as one, they say.
When the preacher stood and we said our vows,
I have 44 years to reflect on that now.
It’s been a hard road for us, ya know;
Many bumpy roads, pitfalls and holes.
But through it all the flame’s shone bright
Growing stronger with each day and night.
We’ve traveled east to west, from state to state
Have seen sunset beaches and the Golden Gate.
But the brightest sight I’ll ever see…
Is my arm around you and yours around me.
