A world unknown

Matthew Anderson 1981 (Rhode Island)

A World Unknown

I see judgment every day.
Judgment on me, on you and on all those around me.
I don't think this world understands me, nor do I understand this world.
You look at me and see my tattoos, my piercings and my hair
You see me as vain, uneducated or maybe even weak
This is not me.
I am a man.
A man of honor, integrity and even a man of strength.
Strength not only physically but mentally and somewhat emotionally.
I do for others more than I do for myself.
I put your wants and needs before my own, leaving myself to suffer for you.
Not only for you but those around you.
Maybe it is time to do for myself.
But i cant
If you feel this way of me now, when i do for others,
Imagine your thoughts of me if i did for myself.
You would not only then think of me as vain, uneducated and weak;
You would then also see me as selfish, cruel, and uninteresting.
This is why I must continue to be me.
Living in this world unknown.
Alone and unwanted.
Remember that I choose this path not for me, but for you.
Would you choose to be me?
To live in this world unknown.
Alone and unwanted.

About this poem

Was my favorite piece until I wrote “What goes around”!. I can remember writing this as if it were yesterday. This explains who I am and why I am who I am with such verisimilitude that I remember writing it as if it were being spoken to me. I speak about how people don’t get me. Until they want something. Then all of a sudden I’m their best friend. I get used and then tossed out. I am insulted by words and looks because I may be different than others. But even after all that I endure. I stand firm in my beliefs and continue to do what I know is right. Even still sinking deeper into my hole of depression.
