Aloof

Laying across a bench, he drowns
As laughter fills a nearby sidewalk
A presence wreaking shades of browns
As ignorance manifests in sordid small talk

Shards of sun have burnt him broken
As passing hearts drum aloof
A cry of help to this hour unspoken
As all are safe under their sheltered roof

His feet have calloused without his shoes
As children skip in sprightly play
A man with nothing except his sight to lose
As blindness numbs this downward day

Dreams succumb to barren despair
as they quench their thirst with faulty pride
an avid life snubbed beyond repair
as unfruitful whispers remain astride

About this poem

I was inspired by the homeless man in front of Chipotle whose life, I hope, was changed by me and my sister's kindness.
