The Dust Left on your shoe

There you were. Walking. Minding your business when you picked me up.
The dust left on your shoe.

I wasn’t sure what to do. I didn’t even know you were gonna be there if I’m being honest.

But we traveled together. You, me, the open sidewalk, all day, me and you, pals for life.
As the dust left on your shoe.

You walked to the bakery, and I was following you, even though each step I faded more.
As the dust left on your shoe.

You walked to the train station, and I stayed, listening to you as you complained about the crowd.
Each step, less and less.
As the dust left on your shoe.

All day, until the sun set, until you finally took me home with you.
I was smaller than before, but you kept me until then. I saw you as my friend. My buddy.

But when you walked in, sighing a sigh of relief, you kicked your shoes off at the door, knocking the dust off from your shoe outside.

That was me. Left outside alone without you.
Nothing more than The dust left on your shoe.

About this poem

This poem was written when I felt abandoned by those close to me. It represents the journey of believing you’re special, that you have someone close, but end up being tossed away.

Aubrey Donald

Since I was a small child, I’ve always written stories and poems to describe how I’ve felt, even when I didn’t know myself. I may not have too much official practice in writing or poetry, but I try my best, and hope it’s good enough. more…
