What did you do?
Pramila Jangid 1998 (India)
The night was dark,
Doomed into hopelessness
everything was dead
you weren't able to feel
Coz the mind was tired
Of confusion, oh the big dumb confusion
Thunder seemed uninteresting
Apathy was in the clouds
You are thinking that there is no more fight left in you
What did you do?
You had a mind, of so much power & energy
That could generate thoughts and channel them at so much speed
You had your body
that could breathe, move in some way or another
What did you do, when
that body couldn't feel pleasure & didn't have that will
When that mind couldn't imagine a better outcome, and was burnt out
What did you do?
That part of you-
That is away from that body and that mind
What did that "you" do?
That part that knew that hope, peace, love,
can be generated,
that they can be sought within, sown back,
and have to be nurtured, to bloom in mind and body
That part is the reason
you are so much more than your past, your thoughts
and the defined "you".
So... What did you do?
Let's tell-
you maybe had a walk outdoors
you maybe slept a little,
you maybe took deep breaths
You may have talked to a friend
You maybe faked a little to boost your esteem
But you NEVER gave up.
You never forgot that it is all about your perception
You didn't give up on generating new desires, taking interest, finding a way to BE, until you are alive again.
And you never took your life for granted,
Coz you understood the
rarity of your existence.
You understood the rarity of a breathing speck of dust
that is you,
In this vast, ever expanding universe.
About this poem
This poem was written when poet felt extreme helplessness and felt genuine 'need' to self-transform but no desire to do so. This created clash in her psyche because she didn't find any will in herself to change but her latent rationale couldn't let her sleep either. To align her soul and mind, she came up with a litany where she continuously asks herself doubtfully yet still makes herself aware of how much capable she is. She, via this poem tries not to numb herself during tough times. more »
