Pride

When you were placed in my arms
I knew what it was to be proud.
When your small hand reached for mine
My heart beat stammered so loud.

As you looked up from the floor
Holding your head high
My breath caught in my throat
And tears left my eye

The first steps terrified me
What would I do if you fall
But you didn't think twice
You came to me walking tall

Now I am giving you my keys
Watching you get in my car
Wondering where you will go
And hoping it isn’t too far

My child, you have grown
And a man stands before me
I see all my wishes and dreams
And everything you can be

I know every mother says it
But for me it applies to few
I am so proud to be your mom
I adore my son, I love you.

About this poem

I wrote this about my oldest son as he grew into a young man. I wanted him to know just how special he was to me.
