Gravity

Erick Arvizu 1980 (Williamsburg, VA)

I’ve tried to stay away
But I never get very far
Your pull on me is like gravity
And I’m a slowly falling star

I held you in my arms today
You were upset and needed love
Despite all of my inner battles
You seemed to fit me like a glove

I tried not to feel in that moment
Unexpectedly I opened my arms
My heart couldn’t bear the sight
I wanted to shield you from harm

When we parted I saw a flicker
There was confusion in your eyes
I couldn’t let myself linger on
So you composed your own disguise

Now I’m trying to stay away again
Keep my heart in its captivity
Yet a smile, cry, or laugh will come
And I’ll be helpless to your gravity
