A Teenage Mother

Paige Cruz 1982 (TN)

Where are you, the father of my son?
He needs you in his life; it's just begun.
Right now, he is so little and so sweet.
For you to see him would be such a treat.
We didn't work out, but he still needs you there.
I know he'll want your love and care.

Where are you, the father of my son?
He's a little older now and my only one.
When he was five, he asked, "Where is my dad?"
I had to tell him our relationship went bad.
As he gets older and look more like you,
I ask myself what should I do?

Where are you, the father of my son?
He doesn't need you. Look what you've done!
He's all grown up now with kids of his own.
One day he asked, "Where was my dad?
What have I done?"
I gave him a hug and said, "You didn't even try."
Have you ever seen a grown man cry?

By the time you realize what you have lost, It'll be too late. He's already paid the cost.

About this poem

I wrote this poem when I was 16 years old and had just given birth to my son. His father left a few months before he was born.
