A LADY FAIR
A Lady Fair
At the foot of a castle, where a forest glowed,
In a long forgotten ancient time,
An azure brook flowed
Beneath a holly-green pine,
And other trees
In the perfumed breeze
Which winnowed through the reeds like a sacred wine
In the soft and dulcet autumn clime.
In the highest tower
Above the bower
A lady most lovely, a lady most fair
Would gaze upon a noble prince,
Where he stood, as in a wistful dream,
Alone, beside a glistening stream,
Ever since he beheld her classic face,
And her raven mane—of regal grace.
He looked upon the tresses of her hair
With a grave and solemn, longing stare,
For never was a beauty so ravishing and rare—
Yet she chose to keep her distance there.
And so he wept, by the brook that still grieves,
In the cool of the crisp, October air—
Amid the still of dappled leaves.
