Dan Bialik 1958 (Normandy, Mo.)

Tell me whatever happened, to the love that we once knew? When times
were much more simple and our love just grew and grew. We always seemed so
happy, the sun would shine so bright. Then apart we drifted, so came eternal
night. To understand the reason, takes a smarter man than I. We know all things
must change, just as all of us must die. I hate to see you leaving but I know
it must be done. I love you no less baby, to me you're number one. I don't
understand the reason, but your feelings I can see. My heart will hold for-
ever, but my hands will set you free. I'll wait here for you baby, though I
know you won't be back. The door must be left open, at least a little crack.
I may find another lover, but it just won't be the same. Although I see her
standing, I still will call your name. I'll see you in my dreams, I'll reach
to hold you tight. Then I'll wake with my arms empty, in the middle of the
night. I just can't see the reason, but your happiness must be. The tears will
fall forever, as my hands, they set you free.
