A Wing and a Prayer ....... for Ginny

Minnie Jane King 1952 (Warren County, TN)

God in Heaven help us
Get through this time of grief.
Comfort, guide, watch over us,
Strengthen our Belief.

For the time we had to love her,
Lord, we wouldn't take a penny;
Now we must beseech Thee, Lord --
Take good care of Ginny.

A flower here on earth, she was --
A rose about to bloom:
And now that she is taken,
We feel not much but gloom.

Help us to realize dear God,
She now resides with Thee.
Quickly -- teach her how to fly --
An angel she must be.

Let her walk the street of gold,
And bask in Your Great Light.
She knows much more than we do now:
Please smile as she takes flight.

Lord, often here on earth below
We cannot understand
The purpose, greatness of Thy ways --
Have Ginny take our hand.

"A little child shall lead them,"
You told us long ago.
Ginny's gone before us --
May she help guide us home.

About this poem

My daughter was scheduled to take her college entrance exams on a Saturday. She would be riding to the exams (approximately 30 miles away) with one of her lifelong girlfriends. The night before the exams, my daughter and I heard several sirens sounding down the highway closest to our home. We had no idea what had happened. Upon listening to the local news the next morning, we heard that there had been a terrible car crash which had taken the life of one. That one turned out to be the friend that my daughter was planning to go with to her exams: killed by a drunk driver.
