HOT

JP. 1948 (United Kingdom)

HOT

As you grope for the clock in closest night
And there’s no breeze at all or any respite
It hot and so sticky as you lie to perspire
Just a little cool balm is all you require
But the window is shut and locked down fast
And the sky just outside is grey overcast
So you pace the cold floor to cool your feet down
Noting how quiet the night with no traffic sound

It was hot to begin with so you slept in the raw
The idea unsound because love wanted you more
That time spent embracing as skin welds together
A pleasure destroyed, a curse upon weather
As you wander the house in the heat of the night
You pray for the morning and tomorrows new light
So you sit in the shower and set it on cold
On these long hot summers decide you’re not sold

But now you are cooler and crawl back to bed
As you find someone’s moved to your side instead
So you push them away take your territory back
All you want is some sleep and a space in the sack
And as you lie down you begin to perspire
Your skin is ablaze and it feels like wet fire
Then you hear the buzz of an unwelcome midge
And decide it is cooler in front of the fridge

So you pick up a pillow and decamp to white goods
As you see the heat lightning crack over the woods
And with the door open cool from Frigidaire
Head down on the pillow enjoying cool air
You close tired eyes to drift off to cool sleep
And you try all you know but can count no more sheep
Much cooler by now but all thought of sleep gone
As you remember you can’t sleep if the light is left on.
