Alone in the Smoke

This is called
"Alone in the smoke"

I am standing here by the bonfire looking at a field,
Wondering what my memories might yield,
In the darkness a sound is heard,
Shots ring out, cries of pain, shouts of men in a fight,
No idea of the fright that is to gain,
Only to be drowned out by rain,
The smell of burnt flesh fills my nose,
Like water leaving a hose,
Blood soaks the sands of time,
Only to blanket my mind,
The smoke surrounds us all,
Burning our eyes even when we fall,
This distant battlefield ever so near,
To those of us who fought with tear,
I find myself about to choke,
Standing here alone in the smoke.
